Good Deeds Friday (on a Tuesday!) - Click and Give for nothing

by chrisglos @ Tuesday, 31. Jul, 2007 - 08:46:53

Each Friday I urge you to click the links below which will help others at NO cost to you. The effect this has can be enormous the more of us do it.

- If just 30 people read my post today and click on the links, then we can provide a huge amount of help.

- If each one of you then passes these details on to 5 others, then think how much more we can do. All for no more effort than a quick email and a quick click.

-------------
"why not take 1 minute to click each of the following links and by clicking on the coloured tab you can ensure that foodstuffs, books, or care is donated to each of the groups. The sponsors redirect their advertising costs to pay for the donations instead….And it costs nothing to you":

The Hunger Site
For each person who clicks the hunger site, 1.1 cups of staple food stuffs will be donated. Yesterday, 91,755 were generated.

The Breast Cancer Site
For each person who clicks, funding will be given for free mammograms. Yesterday, 2.9 women benefited where they would not otherwise have done.

The Child Health Site
For each person who clicks, vital health supplies and services will be provided for children in need. Yesterday, 857 kids benefited from this.

The Literacy Site
For each person who clicks, underpriviledged children in developing countries will benefit from the chance to improve their literacy. Yesterday, 498 books were provided.

The Rainforest Site
For each person who clicks, 11.4 square feet of Rain Forest can be preserved and saved. Yesterday, 578,949 square feet worth of Forest preservation was funded.

The Animal Rescue Site
For each person who clicks, 0.6 bowls of food plus care will be provided for animals in care. Yesterday, 66,475 bowls of food were provided.

It would be really great as well, if you could link this post in your 'bloglists' to get others to do their bit, and leave a comment to say ‘Ive been a good boy or girl’.
:)

Thanks

A musical recommendation

by chrisglos @ Monday, 30. Jul, 2007 - 12:18:46

I like this album.

And because I like it, and Im a giving kind of person, I felt I should tell you good folks about it too.

Its by a band who go by the moniker (I like that word) of 'Mr Hudson and the Library'.

I should really give a low-down of what type of music it is, but Im feeling too lazy to write too much today. Suffice to say, if you like Arctic, Fratellis, Feeling, Razor, Kooks, Kaiser, Mark Ronson, and stuff like that, with a nod to a bit of Clash like dub, and Jam-isms, then you'll probably enjoy it.

Anyway, ch-ch-ch-check it out:

Blackle - the eco google. A One Change Wednesday special

by chrisglos @ Wednesday, 25. Jul, 2007 - 12:48:48

Blackle - the eco google. A One Change Wednesday special

http://www.blackle.com

From the creators:
"When your screen is white, be it an empty word page, or the Google page, your computer consumes 74 watts, and when it's black it consumes only 59 watts. A guy Mark Ontkush wrote an article about the energy saving that would be achieved if Google had a black screen.

Taking into account their huge number of page views, according to
his calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved."

In a response to this article Google created a black version of its search engine, called Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but with lower energy consumption.

I doubt its been proved yet, and even so, the energy savings may be small. However, it all adds up. Not to mention the most important benefit it will give - which is acting as consistent reminder to be energy conscious every time you see the screen.

Have a look and help save energy!

PC Sound problems....please help I beg you!!

by chrisglos @ Thursday, 19. Jul, 2007 - 19:12:07

My pc died a few weeks ago and I thought all was lost. Thankfully, it was resurrected - well, rebuilt minus all of my files.

However, since then, I have no sound on it. And Im at my wits end as to what to try next.

Ive checked all the devices, drivers, enabling, troubleshooting, updating drivers etc.

Its got Soundmax Digital Integrated Audio. And Windows XP Pro.

If I plug my headphones in, they work. But no Windows sounds or media or anything plays normally through my PC. I have no separate headphones, just a little speaker opening on the front of the base unit.

I can find nothin in the help guides, changing settings etc that makes it work - there are no compatibility or hardware conflicts coming up and everything shows as working normally.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Random things that pop up in my head and I have no idea why..3

Wednesday 18 July 13:32pm:

Whilst watching some documentaries recently and reading newspaper articles, the phrases 'Anti-Semitic' and 'Anti-Semitism' have cropped up quite a bit.

Which made me wonder, nobody ever actually uses the phrases 'Semitic' or 'Semitism' which would be the obvious opposite.

So do they exist? If you're not Anti-Semitic you're Semitic?

Or if youre opposed to Anti-Semitism, does that make you Anti-Anti-Semitic?

Just wondered.

Hindsight. Its a beautiful thing

by chrisglos @ Monday, 16. Jul, 2007 - 22:15:17

For those with a masochistic leaning who actually read my blog, or, heaven forbid, actually look out for activity, may have noticed a certain period of inactivity of late.

Well, theres a reason for it. And unlike previous absences, this one wont be explained away in a cryptic charade.

My computer died the other week. It was sudden and came by surprise. One day it was there. The next it wasnt. A metaphor for life perhaps, but thats an aside.

And like the grade A tool I am, did I have anything backed up? No.
Did I have all of my personal photos saved anywhere else? No.
Did I have my music and (illegally) downloaded films on disc? No.

My website - which was about a week away from being uploaded to a host and onto ftp and all that jazz - was that 5 months of work backed up anywhere else? No.

So there you have it.
No pc, no communication tool.

And now we have to start right back at the beginning. The end was in (web)site too.

So, here we go again.

Hello!

Looking for Loans

by chrisglos @ Monday, 16. Jul, 2007 - 21:59:33

Personal loans.

Not something you just pick the first one for and hope for the best, is it? Which is why its always worth while getting personal loan comparisons or to use loan calculators to work out what you can borrow. And afford.

Its just as important, if not more so, when looking for secured loans for a mortgage. Most lenders have loan calculators on their sites to help.

Dont go searching blindly, when looking for personal or secured loans.

I used to like those. I could use them as little bridges to put across things so my matchbox cars could drive over.
