There's no two ways about it - I'm a complete numb nuts.

This morning, after getting in late and being out all day and night yesterday, I wasn't expecting to wake at my usual time so thought I'd be getting up a bit later than normal. Not much, just fifteen minutes or so and getting a slightly later bus.

But, there I was, sun blazing through the window, nice and fresh but warm, waking up and taking a quick cursory glance at my phone, thinking:
"Ooh, its a bit earlier than my alarm, that means I can get the seven am bus still instead of quarter past"

So up I get, still tired, but a quick blast in the shower, clothes on, out the door and strolling to the bus stop.

Except when I get there, the board says the next bus is at 6:32.

A look up towards the time display then makes me realise its actually only 5:50am and not nearly seven....

Ah, summertime and the living is easy....and festival time is nearly upon us. Yippee.
I'm very, very fortunate this year to be able to attend Camp Bestival in Dorset for free - woohoo - and possibly wrongly over-excited at the prospect of Will Young being there; more so than it being PJ Harveys only festival appearance I know, and Hugh Furry-Wantstoeatitall getting all excitable with his foodstand.

Sadly I cant make BeachBreak to cover that, and Secret Garden Party clashes with everything else. It's fab to have the opportunity to cover loads of festivals, but oh, the drama, too many clashes to milk it all the way one should. But theres also a lovely little local festival called Blissfields to do, which is ace. And they do free tractor rides. Brilliant.

Speaking of local, its very pleasing when you see up-coming local bands start to makes waves, especially when you think they are well-deserving of it, and equally worthwhile on the national stage as their peers. I like these guys, and they've had an endorsement from Rob de Bank at lasts years Bestival, and Huw Stevens.

Their new single is fab (in my opinion anyway) and cracking for summer, and they're great live. You can even read about it here, if you like:

http://www.mintsouth.com/2009/05/review-fresh-legs-chess/

Well worth a quid or two of anyones money, I think.

After the disappointment of missing Morrissey last week, the intense sunshine has got me dripping a bit of sex wee in anticipation of festivals, camping, sunburn, sitting in the middle of the campsite in my Anchorman style pants and trailer trash vest (long story from last years Truck festival, which also involved the sporting of a Mexican paedo 'tache. Dont ask) and scabby toilets.

Oh, and I also got an awesome new hat, which makes hatman here very happy.

Important things that should make the reader that little bit more wised up to how the world works, and even trigger some kind of action from them.

So it really, really, fucks me off to see pretty much every single newspaper today carrying pictures and copy of the 'trauma' from the Champions League defeat last night.

It's not as if its 'news' anyway that would have escaped anyones attention who has caught the tv, radio or internet in the intervening twelve hours. Not to mention the fact that don't they have back pages for those kind of headlines.

Yes, we all know that (most - not all) newspapers are concerned with sensationalism over fact anyway, and come to expect that every single day from the red tops and tabloids. But usually the broadsheets and more forward thinking liberal papers arent as bad.

The Champions League wankfest leaves a bad taste in my mouth anyway, as its just a groomed exercise in corporatism and commerciality, believing that the more money and flash that is on display, equates to bigger and better. (And Im no football basher, I love my Hammers.)

Its just so bloody infuriating to gaze across all of the front pages and see them all treating this football match as headline worthy news, giving it the same level of gravitas and 'pain' against a backdrop of a 'head in hands' Rooney, as they would a picture of a dazed troop in the aftermath of a conflict zone.

 Comments

...d'ough!!

Oh, calamity.

I've incurred the wrath of my colleagues, I'm sure, as I failed to deliver birthday donuts this morning. Admittedly, they would have been a day late anyway. And I still don't quite understand the logic in the tradition of buying everyone else cakes and goodies on your birthday...surely it's the other way round!

But I was unable to find one single donut in any of the bakeries or supermarkets this morning - is there some kind of county wide dough shortage? Is it a national holiday for bakers? a strike? Bizarre...

But on the plus side, Morrissey also failed to deliver this week, and very graciously cancelled Monday nights gig. The official line is due to illness, but I'm sure it was a sympathetic action after hearing that I had to give up my review and interview slot due to work committments. God bless ya, Moz.

Oh what the hell, triple poo.

This week has been immensely tiring, trying and stressful, putting in about eight million hours into a project ready for go live. And thats not yet counting the working over the weekend, including Monday. Yes, not just any weekend but a bank holiday weekend. And technically my birthday weekend - which I dont normally pay much attention too, except that for once in living memory it might have been quite good. Not least because theres someone around making me smile at the moment, but because Monday was meant to see me with a press guestlist to review Morrissey, and interview the support band.

But my dilemma has meant I have to give it up because I cant guarantee the system things (cant be arsed to get all technical) will be ready for me to test and release early enough before im due to leave.....and we all know the law of the sod, that if i assume they will be, they wont and it will be too late to find someone else. And if I cancel (like I am) then its all bound to go off without a hitch the night before.

Then I thought fuck - I forgot how good this is. After that came a third thought - yes, three in a row - and guess how it started? Yep - fuck.

Surely everybody enjoys a good fuck or motherfucker when used effectively in a song? And by that, I mean not including general rap songs, comedy or crap metal or overly obvious ones...

I think Killing in the Name of still comes out on top, not least because of the sheer number of them. Surely the best use of the word in a song ever. Or is it?
So for artistic research I got to wondering what my favourite uses of it were in other songs that are great in their own right, but somehow enhanced just by virtue of an additional fuck.....

.....heres a few to start things off, in no particular order:

Neil Young - Fucking Up
Legend.

Prince - Pussy Control
(..."good morning ladies and gentlemen, boys and motherfucking girls..." which of course, whilst on the subject of Prince leads to...)

Prince - Sexy Motherfucker
(Top marks just for the sheer jaw-dropping cheek when it came out for a mainstream(ish) artist to stick it to 'the man' and call a song this, and have it be a top three hit no less. "In a word or two, its you I wanna do, no not your body, your mind, you fool....you sexy motherfucker")

Dinosaur Jnr - Freak Scene
(Its use in this song is subtle, which makes it even more enjoyable to let loose when it comes in.."so just dont let me fuck up will you, cos when I need a friend its still you...")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m6DgqzDMhw

Zodiac Mindwarp - Fucked By Rock
(Who hasnt been? "Fucked by Rock...I like it" and the additional, "I gonna take all my money, and piss it up the wall....and stick it up my nose, stick it up my fucking nose")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPII43fAssg

Datsuns - MF from Hell
(she made me feel, like a motherfucker from hell, yeah)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWVxGFIpPB8

Fight Like Apes - Jake Summers
(That scream, basically. Especially live)(special soft spot also for 'Digifucker')
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OnJDoNyTZY

Nine Inch Nails - Closer
(Something about the NIN that just feels so right with a good use of it in the middle. sadly blanked out on here though)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4VAv8y2hHM

-------
thats a few for now.

So..............whats your favourite fuck then?

There is no reason for it other than the clear onset of a mini nervous breakdown. Hopefully this can be averted by a little break this evening, and the chance of a cheeky bordeaux as I've got a gig to review.

And strictly speaking, it wasn't last night. And whilst we're being open here, technically he didn't save my life.

But, in a way it will give me some of it back. I may have mentioned before that I have a bit of a dental phobia - possibly stemming from a childhood dentist who was a cross in the looks department between Jim Carrey as Lemony Snickett and the ChildCatcher from Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang. Horrible old man. I bit his finger once. That'll learn him. And also an occassion when I needed some wisdom teeth removed, that were still claiming squatters rights in my mouth way after they had any right to still be there (arent they meant to sort themselves out in childhood?). That was particularly toe-curling due to the aneasthetic injection having to be given through the PALATE at the roof of my mouth.

So anyway, yada yada, long term phobia and not going becomes a bit of a vicious circle. Now I want to make it clear here, that I'm not some hideous Shane McGowan alike - theyre not that bad! - I can smile and show my face in public without scaring small children and puppies. But its a confidence thing really.

Well, for a few years it was fine - you know that you probably need something doing here and there, but its not horrendous, you still look okay, and theres no pain or anything, so kind of live with it.

However, its been niggling me, and as well as the phobia, the other vicious cycle of not being able to afford private care, plus the inevitability that the longer you leave it, the more needs doing, the more it costs, keeps you going round the proverbial dental hamster wheel and feel nothing will ever get done. Not many people have a few thousand pounds available for something as minor as a few fillings here and there and the odd extraction. At about 100 quid a go per filling, plus registration, and so on, its a nightmare.

But, after years of nothing else going wrong or getting worse, out of the blue I was assualted by two absesses in a row, and had to get emergency treatment. Bastard things they are, worst pain in the world.

Many many months later, my fear of constantly being conscious that I need things doing makes you exagerrate the issue and think that its worse than it is - a bit like losing confidence because youve got a spot on your nose, which really isnt that bad and people dont actually shun you like a leper, except in your head its a hideous carbuncle that makes you feel like you dont deserve to be seen! So, self confidence nil points; feelings of lack of self worth - loads!

Well late last week I finally got confirmation of a place with an NHS dentist - I know, its like a lottery win isnt it?

And not only that, but - after sweating and shaking like a public school boy in the showers - having had the dentist try to soothe me and have a look, its nowhere near as much work as I thought. Okay, its a fair few (9!!) fillings, an extraction and some other bits and bobs, but most of the fillings are tiny little 'tippex' affairs. But its not a rancid, oozing cavern!!

And not only not only that (erm, yes, thats right), the WHOLE lot will cost me not a few thousand like it would in private treatment, but.......two appointments........£47 for EVERYTHING.

I could have kissed him. Though he'd probably prefer I didnt.

Its made me feel so much better about losing my inflated fear and lack of self confidence, and that its all going to be okay and Im actually.....normal and not the phantom of the opera.

The timing couldnt have been better either, as with my rental move next month and finally living on my own in a nicer place, and this at the same time, its perfect. Add to that a few 'liaisons' which might progress further, and the sun is well and truly shining this summer.

This is an immense infringement of civil liberties, not to mention a major risk to our private data - but it won't make us any safer. The sheer amount of information that the Government intends to collect will be impossible to analyse properly and will undoubtedly turn up false positives while missing potential security threats amongst the morass of spam emails and private chat.

So, for one day, we should send a message to the Home Office - "you want to see our emails? Ok then, here they are then!".
Perhaps a little recap and back-story might be required here to explain the aforementioned protaganists. A few weeks ago I was fortunate to be on the receiving end of a conversation that ended with the sublime statement '..and then he punched an ostrich in the face'. This in itself was bizarre enough behaviour, but further revelations revealed that not only had this person done this once, but twice. And furthermore, both instances were in an (and quite frankly misguided is an understatement)attempt to impress his girlfriend. Apparently he had vaulted a fence into the enclosure to display his manly bravery in the presence of such a temperamental beast, and the ostrich - affronted at the intrusion on its manor - squared up menacingly, resulting in a punch in the face. A brief trawl through the mans history also revealed he is an obsessive bird freak, triggered by an incident whereby he accidently broke two ostrich eggs as a child (one already named Oscar or something) and so was somehow trying to make amends by worshipping all things bird like from then on. Clearly the ostrich incident goes slightly against the grain of this.

The other person is apparently something of an exhibitionist (to put it mildly) and is slightly unhinged (to put it even more mildly) at the best of times, let alone when infused with Tia Maria. She entered the room last week where an acoustic open mic night was being held, and we were in a respectfully quiet appreciation. Her first actions were a bursting through the doors, accompanied by a loud 'wooooooooo' and asking everyone in sight what was going on, were we having a good time, and 'don't worry I'm here now'. Quite. Attempts to ignore were obviously futile, and embarrassed singers were then forced into surreal conversations over their sets. Somehow, I'm not quite sure how, a statement elicited the response from her about it not being good to be a girl, and its not easy if you've got a fanny. Followed by a very loud 'you should see my grans fanny. Oh wait, she's dead'. From there on in, much falling and clattering followed, along with sidling up to anyone in the audience and attempting to engage them in conversation.

So, perhaps you can see why on a 'car crash' level, I was keen for a bit of a sequel to either event last night. My disappointment was clear for all to see.

However, I did end up in one of those bizarre conversations that you can never remember how you got on to the subject in hand.

Something, whatever it was, prompted the memory from me about Zelda from Terrahawks - the kids tv puppet show - and how she looked a bit like a cross between Medusa and Sheila Hancock:

From here, clearly the legend that is Barry Hercules - he of the chin - came up:

But was misheard by someone else as Barry Herpes. Now that, is definitely a post-watershed character if ever there was one.

It was not as pleasing to hear on the one hand, condemnation that it did amount to torture, yet having concluded that, there would be no retrospective action.

So hopefully, this news will make amends for that:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/apr/21/obama-prosecution-torture-memos-bush-administration

Of course, the question still remains - when will someone bite the bullet and find George Bush responsible for overseeing and authorising war crimes and human rights violations and sentence him? Not to mention various British individuals...

What he and his administration sanctioned, was no different to anything that has been condemned in the third world or east europe by various dictators and presidents (Slobodan, Mugabe) - namely the abuse of power and violation of humans by means of force and torture.

But, after being very lame these last few months with my usual 'do-gooding' and 'eco-ing' I've just donated two bags worth of dvd's to Oxfam. By my calculations, based on their usual selling price of around £4.99, if they sell them all, that will net a nice £350 or so quid for them.

Provided they don't get prosecuted for selling bootlegs as I've just realised that I think there are a few 'dodgy' ones in the mix....

However, I've been aware over the last few weeks or so that it's possibly turning on me and getting a life of its own.

It appears to now be saying 'right, if you don't give the back a bit of a trim now, you can kiss everything else goodbye, cos you'll look like Nicolas 'hairpiece' Cage in Con Air'.
